My Reflection: How far have I come? What do I still need to learn?

Access to information:  Candidates identify barriers to equitable access to resources and services.

How far have I come?

  • Brainstorming in class helped me see how many barriers there can be
  • Always look for situations that cause barriers
  • Group work provides the opportunity for many ideas on how to overcome barriers (developing an access enabler project and reviewing another groups’ work)
  • The project provides solutions to many access barriers identified by other groups

What do I still need to learn?

  • Finding solutions to barriers as they arise by brainstorming with colleagues
  • Identifying barriers that may not be obvious to me

Access to information:  Candidates facilitate access to information in print, non-print, and electronic formats.

How far have I come?

  • Bibliography included books, videos, audio books, web sites, and WebQuests
  • Locating materials from a wide range of sources for the bibliography (GIL, PINES, public library, and Internet)
  • Developing a plan for extended media center hours  to provide more access
  • Reviewing a plan that provides special signage
  • Cataloging and processing books during service project

What do I still need to learn?

  • More about finding and using Marc records
  • More practice in cataloging and processing
  • More practice with the Accelerated Reading program

Stimulating learning environment:  Candidates plan and organize library media centers according to their use by the learning community.

How far have I come?

  • Re-organizing Natalie’s media center
  • Insight from MAF’s media center (positives and negatives)
  • Deciding whether to place a chapter book in E or FIC

What do I still need to learn?

  • Search for new trends in media center design
  • Where to place a picture book which contains mature subject matter

Service Project

Information literacy curriculum: Candidates incorporate technology to promote efficient and equitable access to information beyond print resources.

How far have I come?

  • Use of digital camera to create pictures for signage (access enabler review)
  • Locating web sites, WebQuests, and video streaming
  • Using OPACs to find resources from other locations

What do I still need to learn?

  • Using the SEARS book
  • Reviewing web sites with a critical eye and eliminating all but the best sites
  • Practice searching skills

Connection with the library community: Candidates demonstrate the potential for establishing connections to other libraries and the larger library community for resource sharing, networking, and procedures.

How far have I come?

  • Locating materials from a wide range of sources (GIL, PINES, public library, and Internet)
  • Creating a network of future media specialists in class

What do I still need to learn?

  • Making the best use of LM_Net
  • Connecting with other media specialists through LM_Net and email within my county

How far have I come?

  • Using SEARS for subject headings
  • Finding and using MARC records
  • Using the automation system for cataloging and data collection

What do I still need to learn?

  • Deciding the best subject headings using the SEARS book
  • Practicing with MARC records
  • Deciding which section of the media center is best for certain books

Comprehensive and collaborative strategic planning and assessment: Candidates collaborate with teachers and administrators to develop a library media program plan that aligns resources, services and information literacy standards with the school's goals and objectives.

How far have I come?

  • Creating a bibliography that aligns with a particular GPS
  • Suggesting instructional uses of resources in the bibliography
  • Identifying information literacy skills to be taught with the GPS used in the bibliography
  • Identifying the barrier of media center hours through a staff survey (access enabler)
  • Collaboration with the administration and media personnel to extend media center hours (access enabler)

What do I still need to learn?

  • Familiarity with all grade levels’ GPS by studying the GPS
  • Identifying appropriate information literacy skills for each grade level
